Overview:
The fjords around Narvik are a surprising revelation to most. Narvik itself is scenic primarily only from the mountain behind town (Fgernesfjellet, a great Midnight Sun spot). However, heading North out of town has one of the best back-road fjord drives in the country. Small, quiet roads with grand views throughout. The highlight is Mt Reitnenden in Lavangen Fjord, where you get extremely close to massive vertical walls across a very narrow channel. Take the extra time for a side trip from Grov to Tennevoll to experience the fantasttic region.
Highlights:
- Midnight Sun from the peaks behind Narvik
- Vertically stunning view across Lavangen Fjord to Mt. Reitnenden
- The fantastic drive North of Narvik . . . with view to Rolla and Andorja islands
- Panoramic views over Narvik and Ofofjord from above town
- Hikes above Narvik, especially up to the hut on Rombakstotta route
Hiking in Narvik area Norway:
Rombakstotta/Tottadalen - Start at the viewpoint at the powerstation behind town. The well-marked trail has an excellent view back over Herjangsfjord through most of the hike up to Rombakstotta. This is a solid uphill hike. There are several destinations, th emost obvious being the hut in the pretty valley at the foot of the summit. Allow 3 hours.
Camping in Narvik area Norway:
Narvik Camping is right on the E6 just out of town . . . a nice view, but possibly a little loud.
Driving in Narvik area Norway:
To the North of Narvik, the fjord-side route (mostly Hwy 825), from Grov, through Gratangen and Lavangen, to Tennevoll, is a special back-road trip. Definitely off-the-beaten-track. The scenery is varied and absolutely stunning. A highly recommended route instead of the E6.
