THE BODO & KJERRINGOY FJORDS
Location:  Nordland

Overview:
The Bodo & Kjerringoy group of fjords offer a wonderful diversity of experiences.  Kjerringoy is especially scenic . . . with a great ferry crossing of Mistfjord.  The well off-the-beaten-track Eidetfjord and Nevelsofjord are wonderful surprises with very calm waters.  The town of Kjerringoy itself is also very nice and not to be missing (though more touristed).  South of Bodo, the lead-in to The Coastal Route offers very pretty countryside with a flavor of what is to come ahead.

Hiking in Bodo & Kjerringoy, Norway:
Strenuous hikes mark this rugged country.  Mt Steintind on the way to Festvag and the crossing to Kjerringoy is a clear target (though likely to much for most).  Kjerringoy has many hikes marked on various tourist maps, but in practice are quite hard to find the exact trailheads and follow the trails.  For an easier option, between the spur to Eidetfjord and Nevelsfjord is the nice valley hikeat Strandvossbotn reserve.  This is one of those places where you may very well have the beautiful valley to yourself.  The trail is easy to follow as far in as you want.  Access is right on the main road.

Kayaking in Bodo & Kjerringoy, Norway:
The Kjerringoy area has great kayaking.  The inner Mistfjord is a nice kayaking spot, with easy access at Festvag.  No roads penetrate into the inner fjord, so it makes for a pristine paddle.  The Nordfjord arm of inner Mistfjord is especially vertical and rocky.  Nevelsfjord is a very protected long and narrow fjord where you can get on the water just about anywhere.  Eidetfjord is another quiet, baylike fjord that is easy to explore on the water

Driving in Bodo & Kjerringoy, Norway:
While Kjerringoy is 100% on the mainstream tourist route . . . it is as if the fjords here do not exist to 99% of travellrs.  Being off the main roads (on easy gravel side roads) helps this tremendously to add to the serenity.  For starters is the scenic Mistfjord crossing at Festvag, to Misten on the way up to Kjerringoy.  Incredibly scenic on both sides of the fjord, including the view back to the massif of Mt. Steintind.  On the Kjerringoy side is a great driving leg up the coast, with two key spurs.

First is Nevelsfjord.  100% off the beaten track.  Do not be scared off by the long gravel road.  It is very well maintained and no problem for any car (it even has bus service).  The fjord scenery starts early in on the road.  A stunning drive into Oyjord, with independent craggy peaks in all directions.  As the fjord curves, new peaks keep coming into view.  A great back-road spot.

Further up past Kjerringoy is the short offshoot to the bay-like Eidetfjord.  A quiet, pretty, hidden-gem.  Peacful, quiet, and pristine.
